Tools

Duration

15 Weeks

What I did

  • Conducted research to explore user challenges in moving process.
  • Ideated solutions and key features whole assessing existing competitive landscape.
  • Determined site navigation based on feedback from user card sorting.
  • Designed low-,mid-, and high-fidelity mockups of mobile-first website.
  • Conducted usability testing and iterated to final design.

Background

“Moving to a new place signifies the start of a new chapter in life. It’s an exciting journey filled with new experiences, opportunities, and challenges. It’s about discovering new cultures, meeting new people, and exploring unfamiliar landscapes. It’s about stepping out of your comfort zone and embracing change.”

I chose to embark on this adventure to truly understand what people go through during a move.

Problem

We want to understand the challenges people commonly face when moving to a new environment so that we can develop a product that helps them adjust comfortably to their new environment.

Empathize

Research Questions

  • What community or people they are looking for after moving?
  • How they want to make connections with neighbor's?
  • What are some accessibility/ primary needs of people in new place?

Approach

  • Five remote interviews were conducted with both male and female participants.
  • All participants were moved internationally or domestically in last two years.
  • Some people relocate for their own jobs, while others move because of their partner’s profession.
"I've met some people through my cousin, but I'd love to have some friends of my own." -Sally

Affinity Map of User Interview Observation

Following the interview, I constructed an affinity map. The insights derived from this, people often worry about making new friends or connections when they move to a new place. The unfamiliarity can sometimes make them feel uneasy.

Define

The challenge isn't just making decision- it's about feeling reassured they're the right ones.

"How might we foster a strong network within the community?"

Potential Solutions

I brainstormed many ideas, then narrowed down to two. The first focused on creating A platform that provides a comprehensive showcase of local events, community profiles, activities, groups, retail outlets, nature, weather, while the second focus on enables direct communication and group formation, allowing users to pose questions to residents and join groups that align with their interests.

I decided to pursue the first idea because...

There are a multitude of avenues for interacting with others, establishing friendships, participating in activities, and sharing interests.

Persona

I’ve merged two distinct types of individuals into a single persona.

Those struggling to make connections after moving with same interest or education.

Others who wanted to make friends to hangout.

Site Map

Based on the card sort results, I developed a modified site map to define key screens, their core content, and connections to each other. This provided a reference as I explore user flows.

User Flows

I developed user flows to dig into how users access the important functionality.
Later, these would guide which page I designed wireframes for.

Ideate

Mid fidelity wireframes.

In mid-fidelity wireframes, I added UX copy to each of the pages, refined the layouts accordingly, and created screens. A few examples are shown below.

Brand Design and Logo

Colors

Colors were chosen to represent Support, Connection, Simple. Primary color dark shade of cyan-blue to show honesty and trust. Medium light shade of yellow to show forward thinking and energy.

Typography

A clean Inter font was chosen for the website. This was chosen for readability. It has a large x-height which allows it to be legible on both large and small screens. The font for the logo is DM Serif Text, it was chosen to represent a more supportive feeling.

Prototype & Test

Scan any product and you'll find harmful and allergens highlighted, as well as you'll also get to know that this product is vegetarian or not.

Usability Testing & Iterations

To make sure my first prototype is working properly and identify any confusion in the prototype, I conducted usability test.

Before:

Some users got confused in the labeling of category.

After:

Added different categories to personalize user's experience.

Final Design

Following the usability testing, I refined some elements of the final design.

Reflections

If I had more time...

To bring "One place" to life, I'd love to:

Community profiles, activities, groups, retail outlets, nature, weather, while the second focus on enables direct communication and group formation, allowing users to pose questions to residents and join groups that align with their interests.

I decided to pursue the first idea because...

It offers numerous ways for people to interact, make friends, participate in activities, and share interests.

Thank you!
